About Carolina Ballet
Originally incorporated on November 11, 1984 as Raleigh Dance Theatre, Carolina Ballet grew out of the vision of J. Ward Purrington for the non-professional student company to become a professional ballet. Under Purrington's leadership in 1994, Raleigh Dance Theatre began the process of transitioning to a professional company. With the selection of Robert Weiss as Artistic Director in April 1997, Carolina Ballet was launched as a fully-professional company with the Ballet's inaugural season opening in the fall of 1998.
To date, the company has presented over 600 performances to more than half a million audience members, not including the audiences reached through educational programs. In the past twelve-plus seasons we have created more new work than any major ballet company in the country with the exception of New York City Ballet Carolina Ballet has distinguished itself nationally by producing new works developed by some of the world's most gifted choreographers, including famed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, Tony nominated and company principal guest choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett, NYCB Ballet Master Richard Tanner, and NYCB principal dancer Damian Woetzel. More than 60 new works have been created during the company's existence. In addition to touring in the state, Carolina Ballet has performed in New York City, Budapest, Hungary, and most recently, China with Robert Weiss's Swan Lake.
